UN Warns of Growing Instability in the World’s Water Cycle

The United Nations has issued a fresh warning that the world’s water cycle is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with countries facing a growing combination of droughts, floods and declining freshwater reserves. The warning was released by the UN’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in its latest assessment of global water resources.

According to the report, 2025 was among the driest years for global rivers in more than three decades. The WMO also highlighted concerns over declining groundwater reserves and glacier loss, which can affect water supplies for millions of people.

The UN says climate change is contributing to increasingly irregular rainfall and changes in river flows and soil moisture. These changes can create problems for agriculture, drinking-water supplies, energy production and ecosystems.

The organization has called for stronger monitoring of water resources, improved early-warning systems and better preparation for both floods and droughts. The findings are being discussed as world leaders prepare for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where global cooperation on major international issues will be a key focus.
