Delhi Breaking News, CM Kejriwal Bail Live Updates (June 21): The Delhi High Court Friday placed an interim stay on the trial court order which granted bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case. The HC is expected to pronounce its verdict by June 25, with the Delhi CM remaining in judicial custody. A day earlier, the trial court had granted the AAP supremo bail, with Special Judge Niyay Bindu declining ED’s plea to keep the bail order in abeyance for 48 hours. Following this, the ED had moved the Delhi HC earlier today, challenging the regular bail granted to Kejriwal.
Why is the CM in jail? Three months ago, Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy scam being probed separately by the CBI too. Kejriwal has been in custody in Tihar Jail. Arrested on March 21, he had stepped out last month on interim bail to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections and surrendered on June 2.
What is the case against Kejriwal? The ED had earlier alleged that Kejriwal was “directly involved in the formulation” of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, which was drafted “considering the favours to be granted to the ‘South Group’ which the ED claimed “secured uninhibited access, undue favours, attained stakes in established wholesale businesses, and multiple retail zones, and paid Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders in return.
